A clogged toilet is a common household plumbing issue. It is something that can happen from time to time. But, if you notice it happening frequently, it is something that you should look into further or you could find yourself with a bigger issue on your hands.

Do you have a toilet issue? Wonder why it is always clogging up? Here we will talk about some of the common reasons your toilet becomes clogged, how to unclog it, and provide you with some simple tips to prevent future toilet troubles.

Why Is My Toilet Clogged?

There are a lot of different reasons why your toilet could clog. They are:

  • Someone flushed items that should not go in the toilet (paper towels, baby wipes, other objects)
  • Too much toilet paper was used
  • You have an older model toilet that is not longer efficient
  • There is a clog in the toilet trap
  • The toilet vent is block
  • You have a blockage in your sewer line

All of these could cause your toilet to not flush properly. There is also the risk it could overflow.

How To Unclog A Toilet

The first thing people correctly reach for to unclog a toilet is a plunger. This often works. The key is to make sure you have a good quality plunger. If this doesn’t work, you could try:

  • Adding a mix of liquid soap and hot water to break up the clog
  • Combining baking soda and vinegar
  • Using a metal coat hanger as a makeshift snake to break up the blockage
  • Call a plumber if the issue persists – this is your best and safest option

How To Prevent Future Toilet Troubles

Being proactive is always the key to preventing toilet troubles. Most of these tips are simple to use and follow. Do the following:

  • Clean your toilet on a regular basis
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals, especially when attempting to remove a clog
  • Fix any issues that arise with your toilet right away – the longer you wait, the worse the issue could become
  • Speak with your children about proper toilet usage
  • Only flush toilet paper – anything else could create a potential clog in your pipes
  • Avoid DIY fixes if you are not sure of the issue or how to repair it
  • If you suspect you may have an issue, don’t wait, call a plumber

Following these simple steps can reduce the odds of you having a toilet clog or other toilet troubles.
