So, you want to upgrade your bathroom. You want to make some changes to the fixtures, hardware and improve the space. But you are somewhat unclear about the type of project you need to undertake. Do you need to remodel or renovate your bathroom? What is the difference?

Here we will talk about the differences between a bathroom remodel and bathroom renovation project.

Remodelling vs Renovation – What Is The Difference?

You hear the terms remodel and renovation used interchangeably with each other all the time. While they are similar terms, there are some differences to what they refer to. Both refer to you making changes to your bathroom space. The main difference between the two is that a renovation refers to updating the look and feel of the space, whereas a remodel involves changing the structure of the space and potentially changing its purpose. For example, gutting a bathroom and turning it into a closet or using space in your basement to build a new bathroom.

What Does A Bathroom Renovation Look Like?

Here are some of the steps that could be included as part of the bathroom renovation process:

  • Replacing your vanity or mirror
  • Upgrading the toilet
  • Replacing your bathtub or shower
  • New shower heads and faucets
  • Painting
  • New lighting fixtures
  • Installing new flooring

Renovation projects tend to be more affordable because you usually don’t require structural changes. They often also provide you with a better return on your investment because you are putting less into the project. Depending on the scope of the project, you may or may not require a permit.

What Does A Bathroom Remodel Look Like?

Most people choose a remodel project to improve a poor design or layout. You want to make changes to improve the flow and better utilize a space in your home. A remodel involves changing the space or its purpose. Here are some of the steps that could be part of a bathroom remodel process:

  • Removing walls
  • Changing the size and structure of the space
  • Moving the toilet or shower

Remodels typically are the most expensive projects because you will also have to move things like plumbing pipes, electrical and even duct work. In almost all situations, you will require a permit to move forward with your project.
