What to Do vs. Not to Do When Dealing with a Sudden Plumbing Emergency

No one wants to have a plumbing emergency, but most households experience one over the years. Clogged toilets, a burst pipe, sump pump malfunction, and a whole host of other issues happen all the times in homes across the city. Even with your best efforts a sudden plumbing issue can arise. When they do, its important for you to know what to do and, just as important, what NOT to do.

Here we outline some important steps to take and some things you should never do when reacting to a plumbing emergency:

What To Do When You Have A Plumbing Emergency

The first actions you take when reacting to a plumbing emergency can either help minimize the potential damage or make things worse. Here are the steps you should take:

  • Identify the source of the issue: Quickly look around your home to find the source of the plumbing issue. Remember, it may not always be in the most obvious spot.
  • Turn off the water: Find the closest water shut off valve near the issue and close it. This will stop water from continuing to flow out. Once the water is off, open the faucets to drain the water in the pipes and divert water from the leak source.
  • Do what you can to minimize the damage: If you notice a small leak, do your best to prevent damage. This could mean using plumbers’ tape to cover a hole in the pipe or putting a bucket under the leak source to collect water. Move electronics and other items to reduce damage (if it is safe to do so).
  • Shut off electricity to the affected area: If you have a basement flood or leak, its important to shut off the power to the area if you fear water could compromise your outlets and other electrical components.
  • Call a plumber: Call a plumber as soon as possible. They can provide you with invaluable advice on what you can do in the moment and before they can get to your home. They can communicate the severity of the situation and advise you.

What NOT To Do When You Have A Plumbing Emergency At

Here are some things you should not do if you have a plumbing emergency:

  • Try to fix it yourself: If you are not sure what you are doing, you could make things exponentially worse if you try to fix it yourself.
  • Avoid commercial drain cleaners for clogs: A clog can quickly lead to an overflow. A re occurring clog is a sign its time to call in a plumber.
  • Putting off repairs: A temporary fix is just that. Even if you get things under control its important to call a plumber and ensure things are fixed by a professional. If you don’t, you could have another plumbing issue in the near future.
