5 Common Myths About Plumbing Busted

Monday, July 26, 2021 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

There is a lot of misinformation and myths out there about plumbing. A quick Google search can provide you with a lot of contradictory advice about what you should and shouldn’t do when performing plumbing repairs or trying to clean your drains. Some of it just doesn’t work and other suggestions could cause serious damage to your plumbing systems. At the end of the day, its always best to get advice from a trusted source. Here we will dispel some of the most cited myths about residential plumbing.

Minor Leaks Are Not A Big Deal

Any type of leak is a potential big deal and should be dealt with as soon as possible. Even something as small as a minor leak in your bathroom faucet is costing you money and wasting water. A leak is a sign there is an issue. You could have corrosion build up or a part could have worn down over time. Perhaps most important is you could have water damage, even if the signs of it are not immediately present.

You Can Flush “Flushable Wipes” And Other Toilet Friendly Items

Just because is says flushable on the packaging and it’s marketed this way does not mean you should be putting wipes and other products in your toilet. In fact, flushable wipes are a leading cause in pipe blockages and toilet clogs in residential homes. You should only be flushing toilet paper down the drain. Anything else should be discarded in the garbage, or you could find yourself with a hefty plumbing bill to unclog your pipes.

You Can Put Grease Down The Drain If You Cut It

Avoid putting any type of grease down the drain. You should discard it in the garbage once it cools. Some suggestion you can cut it with boiling water, and even add dish soap and then its safe. But this is not true. The grease will eventually cool and stick to your pipes somewhere along the line, potentially creating a clog. Avoid putting it down your toilet as well.

All Drain Cleaners Are Safe

This is not true. There are a lot of drain cleaning products on the shelves at grocery and hardware stores that could cause significant damage to your pipes if they are not used correctly. You are better off using a more natural approach to clean out your drains. Better yet, call a professional and ensure your drains are cleaned the right way.
