How To Deal With Frozen Pipes And Other Common Winter Plumbing Problems

Friday, November 26, 2021 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

Wintry weather and plumbing don’t mix well. Winter brings with it a series of added potential plumbing issues that can arise. As a homeowner, you need to be proactive and understand what you can do to prevent these issues from happening. If they do, you need to know how to deal with them.

Here are three of the most common winter plumbing problems you could encounter:

Frozen Pipes

This can be an issue with your interior and exterior pipes. Either way, a frozen pipe can cause considerable damage. The most widespread problem with exterior frozen pipes is failure to winterize outdoor taps. Always make sure you shut off the water to the exterior taps. Open the tap, allowing the water to drain out. Leave it open for the winter.

Frozen pipes can happen inside as well. This usually occurs in uninsulated areas, such as your basement, attic, a crawl space, or along exterior walls. Find areas where pipes could potentially have exposure. Make sure to insulate these pipes.

If you suspect you may have a frozen pipe, call a plumber to assess the situation.

Clogged Drains

Drains can clog any time of the year, but they are at greater risk of clogging during the holidays. Preparing holiday meals and doing more dishes during this time of year can put stress on your kitchen sink and dishwasher. More food waste tends to go down the drain than it should. You can prevent issues from arise by being more conscious of what you put down the drain. Avoid putting fats, grease, and other food waste that should be put in the garbage.

If you notice things backing up, try a natural remedy such as baking soda and vinegar to break up the debris in the pipes. If the clog continues, call a plumber.

Sump Pump Backup

Sump pumps are often more active in the winter and early spring. This is especially the case when snow and ice start to melt. The constant up and down temperatures can cause things to freeze up or clog.

To prevent this, its important to inspect your sump pump (or have a plumber inspect it) in the fall. Make sure to remove any debris. Continue to evaluate it throughout the winter to ensure it is in good working order. If your sump pump lines freeze, contact a plumber to help you. A backup could cause your basement to flood.
