Have A Dripping Shower Head? Here Is How You Fix It.

Friday, October 29, 2021 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

Drip. Drip. Drip. The sound of a leaky shower head can literally keep you up at night. It is not only an annoying sound, but also wasting water, and a sign that you need to give your shower head some attention. While a minor drip may not seem like a big deal, it can add up to hundreds of litres of lost water each year if left unaddressed. It could also lead to other more severe issues down the road if you don’t address it.

Fortunately, most dripping shower head issues can be fixed quickly. Often you can do it yourself. You most likely have all the tools and supplies needed in your house already. We’ve put together a list of steps to take to fix your leaky shower head:

  • Check your faucet: Make sure that your faucet if fully in the off position. Not turning it off all the way could be a cause of the leak. Even leaving it open slight could cause water to get through the shower head and drip.
  • Shut off the water to the bathroom: Shut off the water to the bathroom as a precaution before doing anything to the shower head. Make sure the faucet is fully off.
  • Remove the shower head: Turn it counter clockwise to loosen it. Do this with care and make sure not to bend any components.
  • Inspect the shower head: Does there appear to be any issues with it inside? Is there corrosion? Notice any rust? Check the O ring, screen and other components. Is there any build up that is causing a blockage?
  • Clean the shower head: Calcium deposits can build up over time. So can other dirt and grime. You can clean it by putting the shower head in a bowl of vinegar for about an hour or so. Rise off with cold water and dry it.
  • Reassemble the shower head: Carefully put all the components back into the showerhead. Reconnect it. Make sure it is fastened tight. Turn on the water, run it for a few minutes. Shut it off and see if there is still a leak.
  • Call A Plumber: If you have tried all the steps above and still can’t get your shower to stop dripping, its time to call a plumber. They will be able to quickly diagnose the situation and recommend either a repair or replacement depending on the condition of the shower head.
