3 Easy Additions for Making a Bathroom More Accessible

Sunday, October 25, 2020 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

Accessibility becomes a more important issue as we age. People want to stay in their home, even as they develop health and medical issues. But, getting around the house as its currently constructed is often an issue many homeowners are faced with. They need to make their home more accessible, especially in commonly used areas such as the bathroom.

Many bathrooms were not constructed with accessibility in mind. This can particularly be the case in older homes. The great news is there are many simple ways to make a bathroom more accessible and functional. And its easier than you think. Here are three of the most common:

Widen The Door/Create More Space

Standard width doors are often not wide enough for people who have accessibility issues. Wheelchairs, walkers, and other support devices can be challenging to get through standard doors. Widening the door size can help eliminate the struggle. Perhaps a sliding door can help create more space, instead of a traditional door that swings inward into the space. You can also add to accessibility by removing bulky and unnecessary items. Something as simple as reducing the size of the vanity or shelving can create a lot more space to move around.

Invest In A Walk-in Tub Or Shower

Want to make it much easier to get in and out of the tub or shower? Switch to a walk-in model. Tub models come with higher sides and a swing open door to make it easier to get in. They also reduce the odds of a slip and fall accident. Walk in showers come with a built-in seat and can accommodate wheelchairs.

There are many different models, configurations, and ways to install these products. You have lots of options. Speak with our installation experts to help you chose the best solution based on your bathroom size and your accessibility needs.

Higher Toilets

Toilets are not one size fits. Getting on and off the toilet can be challenging if you have mobility issues. One way to make things easier and more accessible is to install a toilet with a longer and higher base. You can reposition it to give you more space and even install a grab bar to make it easier to get on and off. Increasing the toilet height, even a few inches, can make a big difference.

Sometimes all it takes is a few changes here and there to make a big difference in your bathroom. Moving things around and improving the layout can drastically improve accessibility and comfort.
