So, you want to update your master bathroom. It’s a common project that many homeowners choose to tackle. You use it all the time and it’s a great project for adding value to your home. It just makes sense to invest in it.

One of the most common questions we receive from our customers who are interested in doing a master bathroom renovation is how long it will take. The truthful answer is that it depends. There are a lot of considerations that need to be factored into the design and renovation timeline. Below, we’ll talk about some of the factors to consider and give you an idea for how long some of the tasks take.

Key Factors To Consider When Designing and Renovating A Master Bathroom

  • Design: Do you have a design concept in mind, or do you want your contractor to come up with ideas?
  • Scope of the project: Do you want to strip everything down to the studs or it is more of a cosmetic remodel?
  • Size: How big is your master bathroom?
  • Materials used: Are the materials you want to use readily available? Will they need to be special ordered? Is there a delay on the products?
  • The unexpected: As with all renovation projects, you never know what to full expect until you start opening up the walls. There could be a small leak, mold, or other issues you were not aware of that need to be addressed. These things will add to your timeline and could affect your design.

A Timeline For Renovating Your Master Bathroom

While no two bathroom renovation projects are the same, below is a general timeline that you can follow to estimate:

  • Demolition: 2 days of work. Potentially longer if there are issues or if access issues are present
  • Plumbing rough-ins: About 2 days of work.
  • Electrical work: 1 to 2 days depending on the design and if you are adding additional outlets or moving wiring.
  • Insulation and drywall: About 3 days of work to hang, mud and tape.
  • Painting: 1 day to paint two coats.
  • Tile work: This could take 2 to 4 days depending on the amount of tile and the complexity of installation
  • Flooring: About 2 days to install flooring and trim
  • Plumbing hookup: Installing things like the new toilet, sink, and shower. This could take 3 to 4 days depending on what you are adding
  • Inspections: 1 to 2 days.
  • Buffer time: Always allow for an extra couple of days to account for unforeseen work and delays.

By this estimate it could take anywhere from 20 to 25 days to complete your renovation.
