If you don’t have the right tools for the job, you may have challenges getting it done right. Plumbing is no different. During a plumbing project, you can encounter many different issues. You never know what type of tools you may need. Fortunately, there are countless types of plumbing tools available. Many are specific to a certain task or are meant for specific plumbing parts and materials. Here, we’ll outline what to look for and the basic plumbing tools you should have in your toolbox.

What To Look For When Choosing Plumbing Tools

In general, here is what to look for when shopping for plumbing tools:

  • The type of tool
  • The function of the tool
  • The quality of the tool (brand, reputation)
  • How often you will use the tool
  • Price and value

If you are going to invest in tools, it’s important to make sure you will use them and get value out of them. If you only need a tool once in a while, you may be able to rent them.

Plumbing Tools To Have In Your Tool Box

Here a list of the core plumbing tools all DIYers and homeowners should have if they plan to do plumbing work around the house:

  • Crescent wrench: Adjustable wrenches are handy for many situations. They are used to tighten and loosen nuts, to adjust shutoff valves, and much more.
  • Caulk gun: There are countless areas around your home that require caulk, especially in the bathroom.
  • Basin wrench: This is a great tool for when you replace faucets. It’s a self-tightening wrench and is designed to be used in difficult to reach places.
  • Plumbers tape: If you are dealing with pipes, it’s essential to create a good seal around threaded pipes.
  • Needle nose pliers: This is a must have for any toolbox. You can get them in different sizes. They come in handy in many different situations.
  • Plunger: Drains and toilets get clogged. It happens. A Plunger is one of the first tools you’ll grab. It’s also one you may use often around the house.
  • Hacksaw: When you need to take a plumbing fixture apart or make adjustments to a pipe, a hacksaw will get the job done. A tubing cutter is an alternative.
  • Screwdrivers and Allen wrench sets: You deal with all kinds of fixtures, nuts, bolts and parts. Having a complete set of screwdrivers and Allen wrenches will ensure you always have the right tool to get the job done.
