The Impact of Toilet Paper: Which Type of Bathroom Tissue Is The Best?

Friday, February 26, 2021 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

While many may think it is a trivial thing, the type of bathroom tissue you use can make a difference. It has an impact on how much you spend, comfort, and how it affects your toilet and plumbing at home.

Flushing the wrong paper product or wipes down the toilet could potentially cause clogging and many other plumbing issues. To ensure you do not run into these types of issues, we will explain the difference between bathroom tissue and other paper products such as paper towels and facial tissue. We will then talk about what happens when you flush the wrong thing down the toilet. Then we will finish with a list comparing the best toilet paper.

Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Facial Tissue – Is There Really That Big Of A Difference?

There is a difference between bathroom tissue, paper towels, and facial tissue. As most people know, you are only supposed to flush toilet paper, hence the name.

Even though all three are paper products, they are made of different ingredients and can break down in water differently.

Facial tissue and paper towel have a different make up. They are stronger and water does not cause them to deteriorate as quickly or easily as toilet paper. Why? They are made to not break down. Paper towels are designed to absorb liquid. The product is woven together using creping and embossing.

Toilet paper and tissues are made of pulp and are meant to be single use only. However, tissues have a smoother surface, contain lotions and scents. They also have a binder agent to help the tissue keep its shape and prevent it from breaking apart.

You should also never flush baby wipes, disposal diapers, cleaning wipes, rags, or any other products, even if they are labelled as flushable.

What If I Flush The Wrong Product Down The Toilet?

The vast number of plumbing issues related to clogs has to do with people flushing the wrong product down the toilet. A Google Consumer Survey found that close to 20% of homeowners had to regularly deal with clogged toilets.

Why? People are flushing the wrong things down the toilet. But it is often a result of misleading products. Another study by Ryerson University found that “disposal” wipes should not be flushed.

Researcher Barry Orr tested 23 wipes that were labelled as flushable. “The report findings showed that none of the wipe samples fell apart or dispersed enough to safely pass through the sewer system without a risk of clogging or causing damage to infrastructure.”

In other words, only flush bathroom tissue down the toilet.

This begs the question. What is the best toilet paper to buy?
