3 Easy Ways Homeowners Can Spot Water Leaks

Tuesday, November 19, 2024 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

Water leaks can cause serious damage and lead to high water bills if not caught early. Acting quickly when a leak is suspected can save homeowners money and prevent costly repairs. Here are three simple ways to identify water leaks in your home.

1. Look for Signs of a Leak

Watch for these common signs of water leaks:

  • Sounds of Running Water: If you hear water running when no appliances or taps are in use, it could indicate a leak.
  • Visible Damage: Mold, mildew, water stains on ceilings or walls, sagging ceilings, wet spots, or damaged floors are strong indicators of a leak.
  • Low Water Pressure: A sudden drop in water pressure may mean there’s a hidden leak in the plumbing.

If you notice any of these signs, contact a plumber right away to prevent further damage.

2. Check Your Water Bill

A sudden increase in your water bill without any change in your usage could signal a leak. Even if you don’t see obvious signs of a leak, a rising water bill can alert you to wasted water due to a hidden issue. Scheduling a plumbing inspection can confirm whether a leak is present and help you fix it before it gets worse.

3. Use Your Water Meter

Your water meter can help detect leaks. Follow these steps:

  • Make sure all water-using appliances and fixtures are turned off, including sprinklers and dishwashers.
  • Check the water meter reading.
  • Wait a while without using any water, then check the meter again.
  • If the reading changes, there may be a leak.

Some water meters also have a leak indicator to make it easier to spot leaks.

Act Quickly to Fix Leaks

If you notice signs of a leak, unexplained high water bills, or a running water meter, it’s important to call a plumber immediately. The faster you address the issue, the more damage and costs you can avoid.
