What is a Backwater Valve and How Can It Stop Your Basement from Flooding?

Monday, August 8, 2016 , Posted by Bradhaw Plumbing

Basement flooding is all too common today. It is a frequent occurrence in homes across the GTA – a reason why homeowners need to take important steps to ensure they reduce the odds of having their basement be the next one to fill up with water.

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, a backwater valve can be the difference between a basement filled with water and a clean and dry basement.

What Is A Backwater Value?

A backwater valves is a simple device that can be installed as part of your basement plumbing to prevent water from backing up into your basement. Here is how it works:

  • Using an internal flap, the backwater valve allows water to flow out of your home.
  • To prevent water from flowing into your home, the flap raises and blocks water flow from coming into your basement.

“A mainline backwater valve can help prevent sewage in an overloaded main sewer line from backing up into your basement. Placed directly into the sewer lateral in your basement, the valve automatically closes if sewage backs up from the main sewer,” according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

As an added incentive to consider installing a backwater value, GTA residents qualify for the basement flooding protection subsidy program. As part of the program, homeowners have a subsidy available of 80% of the invoiced cost up to a maximum of $1,250
